To N.M. Football Family

As the Football Coach at North Middlesex during the 80′s and mid 90′s, we were experiencing great success on the field, we had great support from many people.  One of the “Friends of Football” was MJ Flaherty.  MJ passed away today after a long illness.  We lost a person who would always take the extra step to help others.  MJ was a friend to so many.  I think of this poem that describes MJ.

Friends are far, friends are near, friends will be there to lend an ear.
There to listen, there to laugh, there to knit and care.
But most of all, they are always there thru thick and thin, ups and downs.

MJ was a friend to all of us.

Coach Ruggles

P.S. If anyone has the obituary notice, or details on the funeral, please post it in the comments and we’ll make sure we’re available.

GlennRoberts_52To the Football family:

I should be writing a letter thanking everyone who played in this year’s golf tournament or about our upcoming football season. Not today. Today, I am doing something as a football coach we hate to do: talking about the loss of one of ours – Captain Glenn Roberts. As a coach, we are often asked to write recommendations for players for colleges. This is my recommendation for #52 to God.

I wanted to share a letter that Glenn wrote for the Thanksgiving Day game at North Middlesex last year, where he addressed the team. Again, Coach Ruggles did something amazing, honoring Glenn before the game, bringing his family out to the middle of the field.

Dana Roberts also read this letter at the NM Football Alumni Golf Tournament this July, and there was complete silence from a room of rowdy golfers.

Here’s the letter:

Good Morning Gentlemen,

My name is Glenn Roberts. Most of you probably don’t know me, but 31 years ago today, I put the uniform on for the last game I’d ever play at North Middlesex. It was Coach Ruggles’ first year at NM, and my teammates and I ended the season at 7-3 – at the time the best record in the history of the school.
